I've been looking for a reel to use in both freshwater and saltwater. I've been looking at the daiwa zillion tws and zillion sv tw. they seem the same but one has the sv concept and one does not. what are the differences and which one would be able to cast a variety of heavy and light baits. I'll be pairing it with the legend xtreme I'm getting.

 

 

The SV has a slightly smaller frame, the same as the Tatula CT, and is significantly more comfortable in your hand, though the original Tat/zillion TWS is not at all uncomfortable. The SV would be your best option I expect as long as you don't need huge line capacity for your saltwater stuff.

Also how does the old daiwa TD Zillion 100SHA comare to these? I hear it was pretty good.

performance wise, the Zillion SV TW is the best one for you. The old TD zillion is good, but not as good as the new ones. The 3 reels can differ pretty significantly in price, with the old TD zillion possibly being the cheapest, the SV zillion being the most expensive

If versatility is what you seek, the SV version won't let you down. The spool in the OG Zillion was better suited for baits 3/8 oz and up, and was not as controlled. If you want the best of both worlds, take a look at the SV103.

So would the sv103 be more versatile than the zillion sv tws?

I think that only the 105 is ready for saltwater use. Keep that in mind.

I haven't used an SV103 so I can't comment on that reel, but I do have the Zillion SV TW. I keep it spooled with 17lb-20lb Invizx and use it for pitching and skipping only. For the way I fish the SV TW is a specialty reel and I only use it for short-ish line presentations.. I keep it about an 1/8" from full and find that if I cast my jig a long way I can almost spool it out. If I were to break off way out there I'm not sure if I would have enough line to continue fishing. Depending on where the break occurred. Then again, if you were to use lighter line (10-12lb) and fill it all the way up you may find it has enough capacity for what you want to do with it. I'm pretty sure that the SV 103 has the same size spool so that may be something to consider when deciding how versatile either reel is for your needs.

No. Six in one, half dozen in the other. I feel the SV103 palms better and is more robust. Aluminum side plate vs Zaion. 

My man, if you are going to fish salt and freshwater there's only one option I would take even if I have to look for it ----> the previous generation Zillion Coastal, that and a bunch of spare spools.

Why ? The SV103 has 7 CR bearings and is all aluminum

If you had to chose between any reel of any brand what would the most versatile reel that can be used in all waters be? or your top reels.

Depends on how much money you have burning a hole in your pocket.

With the exception of an Alphas SV105 and PXL Type R, all my Daiwas are older models, so I can't comment on your choices.  I will say I love the blue color used on Coastal reels.  Walmart has the RH Coastal TWS for $159.99 and the Orra Inshore for $119.99.   That is a $70 savings on the Daiwa.  Maybe I should invest in one since I am hoping to move to Florida in the near future.    Or I could buy one and set it on my desk at work so I could admire the beautiful color throughout the day.

I'd just get an SV103 and call it good. It will handle anything from 1/8 oz to 3/4 plus. Spend the extra on a tune, Polish, and drag / bearing upgrade. You'll have a casting machine that can be used for whatever, wherever. What rod will it be riding?

I was thinking about a st. Croix legend xtreme
