Any Kayak Fishermen out there

Featured Replies

just wondering if anyone has experience with fishing from a kayak, i recently was given a predator k111 from oldtowne and it says online that it is a great fishing kayak.  Just wondering if you had any tips or advice for a beginner in this area.  thanks in advance

I have some firends that just love to fish from their kayaks. The advice they always give to people interested is to go sit in your yard with your legs in front of you and practice casting. It takes awhile to get used to casting from that position. The predators are nice boats my friend has the 14' and he is happy with it.

I own 2 of those boats, and they are fun to fish out of.  You can get to where Bass boats can't, that means underfished which is always good.  I added another rod holder on the other side.  It takes a while to get used paddling and fishing.  But its stelthy and you'll catch on quick.  there also fun just to float the a level 2 creek own.  one of my best purchases.  watch out for that netting on the front, oldtown should have thought of something else to make that out of.  You can hook a treble into quickly.

I started kayak fishing last year. ;D It is great ;D There are a lot of nce fish in creeks and small ponds and with a kayak you can quietly get to them.  I had trouble with my hookset at first. It is a different kind of movement when you are sitting that low to the water.  But once you figure it out it becomes second nature.  I switched to 15/6 braid and that helps too. My wife has a yak too and she loves it.  Be careful in the spring :) the water is still very cold.  At least it is here in VT.

I have a kayak that I love to fish from, but like the fellow said a few posts ago, it takes some serious getting used to from a casting perspective.  Most times, you can get farther up a creek in a kayak, and find a honey hole where other boaters can't reach.

What about snakes? down here in SC the cotten mouths try to climb in your Jon boat, I would hate to get one inside a kayak :-[

Yow! That sounds a little scary. We don't have any of those in northern VA, so have never had to deal with it. We do have water snakes and copperheads, but they always go the other way when they see me.

I fish some small streams and float rivers in my Dagger Blackwater 12.5 and love it.  To make it easier I outfitted my yak with the following:

My tackle bag, velco's onto the top bugee cords

Map holder, snaps onto the tackle bag and flips up and out of the way when I want to get into the tackle bag.

Waterproof bag for wallet, cellphone, keys, other personal stuff

Storage bag, mostly for overnight trips, long and thin so it fits way up into the bow of the kayak

2 rod holders, small and simple, each on opposite sides of the tackle bag

Sprayskirt, keeps out drip from the paddle, rain, waves, or even snakes from getting in ;D

Paddle leash, a must if you plan to fish!

I am sure there are better kyaks to fish out of, but I fished out of a Prijon in N. Minnesota for a couple of summers.  Definately strange at first.  I liked to get into those hard to reach areas the previous posts talked about and actaully get out and fish from shore.  This was a whitewater kayak rather than a touring kayak so it might change my opinion if I had the chance to fish out of a touring boat.

I fish out of Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 and Pamlico 100. I have landed many 6,7,8#s. Pretty entertaining stuff wrestling a big un with finesse tackle. Remember to wear your PFD and enjoy the exercise. It's an added bonus. 8-)

I fish out of a Wilderness System, Pungo 120.  I have mounted two flush mount rod holders (behind the seat) and one Scotty up front.  I also mounted a fish finder where the transducer shoots through the hull.  I have only fished out of a kayak last summer and I won't go back.  It's a blast! I would recommend this awesome kayak fishing website,  http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee/forums

This is a great forum and there is alot of info.
