24v ? from Newb

Featured Replies

Good Morning All.

I'm upgrading from a 12v transom mount to a 24v foot control bow mount (Arriving today from Cabelas ;)) I have a stupid question about charging the batteries. I have a portable charger and need to know if I need to remove the jumper cable (+ to -) between the batteries when I charge? I'm thinking I don't but I don't want to cause any damage. I only plan to charge 1 battery at a time until I can get an on board unit.

I've also been lookign at some of the boat conversions that members have done and I must say that there are some real craftsman on this site. Has anyone ever converted an old Fish N Ski into a full out bass boat? That's my plan for this winter. I want it to function for small local tournaments and also something the wife and kids will fit on to worm fish.

Thanks in Advance. Hope I don;t become too much of a pain in the butt.

Hi,

I have a 24 V motor and run two wires to the front.  I have a 2 bank charger hooked up with a single bank to each 12 V battery.  I do not remove the +/- jumper on my system and it works well.

Make sure you have a circuit breaker, of the correct size, as near the battery as possible.  Use the correct size wire and connectors, and everything should be fine.

As long as you are connecting your portable charge to the positive and negative post of the same battery, you do not need to disconnect the jumper.  Just be sure to pay attention each time that you are connecting it to just the one battery battery and don't accidently get across the two batteries.
