jet motor for a Jon type boat?

Featured Replies

I found a guy that has two Seadoo's with broken hulls... he said they both ran but have been in the "junk" pile for a couple of years... he is thinking about what he wants for them, then I will counter....

I have no idea how big the motors are, but I was thinking about that I will get them and put one in a Jon type boat for the weedy areas.... :D

what do you think? will it work?

I have considered doing that for several years but never came across a jet ski/wet bike cheap enough for me to want to buy one and try it. If I ever come across one that has a good, complete drive unit for less than $500 (that's about all I would want to throw away) I will try it. I really don't think it's going to be very practical in the average jon because of all the room its going to take up in the back but never know until it's tried.

I did find one old jet ski but it didn't have the thrust reverser and no way to add one so I passed on it, Figure I will need a reverse.

I would not put those motors on a jon type boat.  Lot of work for what type of payback?  To get you in the weedy areas?   Well you can do that with TM's.  Do you really have that many weedy areas that would require this type of set up.  Seems a little crazy to me, but I've had some pretty crazy ideas in the past myself!

Ablefisher, I see you don't have any south Georgia redneck blood in ya.   There's tons of stupid things us damb***es down here do that are just a little (sometimes even a lot) crazy.   Actually, I woudn't even try it just to run lakes with, like you said TM's, push poles and outboards work much better for them.  My reason for trying it was to run some of the rivers I fish.   Outboards lower units and props have a short lifespan on some.   I'm talking where you have to get enough speed up to slide over trees in order to get up them.   Even outboard jet drives get torn off boats sometimes.  Figure with an inboard jet, might be able to just hit them at full speed and keep on trucking.   This is also from the same redneck that runs over 300 hp on the back of an 18.5' boat that's only rated for 175.

This is the stupidest and possibly coolest idea I've ever heard of! PLEASE do it! I want to see pictures. You make this work and you are my hero! Good luck! ;D

I have high doubts on this one. I have a boston whaler jet and it's a larger unit than you are imagining. The engine is your basic 2 stroke, but not like a motorcyle,it's larger. about 2.5 square. Then there the jet pump. This also has to sit "inside" the boat meaning all but the nozzle and intake have to be "above the floor or bottomofthe boat. You have to go through the hull on an angle. Tricky.

Will take up tons of area in your boat.

To give you an idea,..I remove the cooler fromin front of the center console (straps down) and the console is hinged and lifts towards the bow.  In there, there is a motor well and this is where the power plant is.  The jet assembly runs alll the way to the rear.  this boat is 16.5 with platform.  Just so you have a size realtion.  Oh, it was a Yamaha waveIII 650cc but I switched it out with a Yam wave III 701cc.  You can't just rebuild a top end on these, you have to replace the whole thing. (somthing else to keep in mind if you are buying motors that have sat.  As long as they weren't blown, you can rebuild but if the skirts on the pistons are damaged, the whole motor is junk except for the electronics bundle because of those aluminum bits that were bouncing around in the crankcase.  Careful, do alot of research and good luck.
