Small Flats/shallows boat hull design question

Featured Replies

I have been reading/hearing some conflicting stuff on hull design.

For a shallow runner, with flat top deck is it better to have a slightly curved hull or a flat hull with runners?  I have heard both I've heard it is always better to have a curved hull with a slight V bow.  And I have heard that it is wasted on a small boat I want around a 16x4' boat.

A simple flat bottom Jon with a deck but some guys around here have been telling me I wont be satisfied that I should go with the V right off.

So, I come to the experts what do you guys think?

It depends on how much you are looking to spend. I don't know if I would get a flat bottom jon If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive aluminum boat my .02 would be to get a welded hull (a lot of the welded hulls are more of a mod V) jon with a 20" transom. For instance compare the difference in design between a companies riveted and welded jons. Welded jon hulls will be very similar to a companies aluminum bass boat hulls, in some cases they may be the same.

True flats boats are designed for shallow running and no hull slap when poling. The v hull on flats boat I think is more for the stealth of flats fishing most flats boats will give you a rough wet ride in a heavy chop. Most flats boats are hand made and fairly expensive.

i own a flat bottom u can go really shallow with them

they sit alot higher in the water

with that said if there is choppy water or waves

u better hang on there are very rough riding

a v bottom boat cuts though choppy water and waves alot better but u lose when u take them shallow because they sit lower in the water
