What did I do to my reel? Update. Fixed

Featured Replies

Dumb question. But I guess there is a first to everything. Today, I accidentally pressed the thumb bar in on my new Curado 70 as I was fighting a fish. ( not used to the size of the reel!) It took me a second to react and I made about two or three cranks of the handle with the thumb bar pressed down. So now my reel makes a buzzing noise during the cast and retrieve. Wondering what i may have broken..... I was thinking I may have fouled up the pinion gear but thought I'd post this and hope I didn't break anything.

I'm not good with posting videos but it essentially makes a buzzing noise when retrieving and a slight buzz/whine when the spool is spinning free.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure that you've permanently damaged anything. Im sure Mike at DVT will respond. But to start have you tried taking the side plate removing the spool completely then reinstalling it?

Oh and like Bill Dance says on his commercial for BPS, don't do that!

I used to press the thumb bar and turn the handle with my thumb on the spool on my silver max to get birds nests out.Never ruined anything. If its slight, and it sounds like its a new reel, are you sure it wasn't doing it before and your just noticing it now?

Lol. Thanks. The reel is so small that I was palming it with the base of my thumb over the bar. Once I put pressure on the rod with the fish, it was inevitable.. I have huge hands and I'm used to the 200 sized.

I took the spool out and put it back in already. That helped it a little, but it is still there. The noise is definitely coming from the handle side btw.

It definitely started after the mishap. It's quite audible. I've used it for about four trips now and never noticed anything.

Pressing the thumb bar with a load applied is a good way to trash a gear set. If you are comfortable servicing your own reels, take it apart now. Stop using it until you do.

Come to think of it,maybe that's why the threads on the gear shaft of my silver max are toast.

I'd trust .ghoti and get it serviced before using it any further.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I took apart and found that the pinion gear had black residue on it. I cleaned it, put it back together and now it is quiet again.

now I need to learn to use it correctly.
