Boat Insurance

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any advice on who to go with for insurance for a new boat?

Im going to be getting a new boat within the next few months.......probably a new Nitro or Stratos.

Im 20 and a college student.  I checked progressive and they quoted me over $250 bucks a month!!! which is outragous.......as far as im concerned.........thats more than the boat payments.

The only thing that i "NEED" is $300,000 accident liability to be able to fish most tournaments that require that as a minimum.

I mean.......if $250 is what im looking at i just cant do it.

Thats crazy! Insurance is legalized extortion....

My Progressive is 350 for the year with some added options on a new 2006 Nitro. With progressive our two biggest factors on premium costs is your credit score and driving record (in that order). Something that will help get you about a 20% discount is take an approved USCG approved boaters safety course. There is a bunch on the web and the exam will only cost 15.00.

I'm at $400/yr. with State Farm...  Had farmers back when they could write boats, they were less.  My advice would be to call around.

You actually need more than liability... you need theft and comprehensive also, since you said "payments"... the lender will require "full coverage."

If at all possible, you may want to get a parent to co sign the loan, and then have them get insurance on the boat and put you on as an occasional user. It should drop it quite a bit.

Wow, that is steep. I was looking and got quotes at around $125 a year from different companies. That is only for loss of boat though as my homeowners covers liability on the water because I'm under a certain HP. I think 90HP + and the price goes up.

I also didn't take a loan so I'm sure that is why the loss of boat insurance wasn't mandatory.
