Hey guys so I am thinking about picking up a Dobyns Fury rod for throwing football jigs, heavy texas rigs, and maybe carolina rigs. Most weights would be 1/2 plus the plastic. I have read that dobyns power ratings differ a lot from other brands power ratings. Would I want a MH or H for this? I was looking at the 7'6 MH but it says it goes up to 2oz. That seems like over kill possibly, but I do really like that length. Would that rod be a good fit for this? Ill be fishing 10-25ft deep most times. Thanks!

 

 

I would do the 735c. Also works as a good frog rod as well

I own the 765 Fury and IMO it is much too stiff for anything under 5/8 oz. plus plastic. I bought it with intentions of it being my dedicated jig rod but unless you're going to be using 3/4 oz. jigs it won't load and cast properly. I now use it as my flippin/pitchin rod and with any weights 5/8 oz. and above it is perfect. So unless you're going to be using really heavy weights/jigs I would look at the 734 or 735.

First, Dobyns rods differ more like 1/2 of a step lighter than some other rods.  Of course some brands of rods are known to be at least 1 whole step heavier than the average rod blank with the same specs.  Abu Garcia is one of those that run much stiffer than other brands. If you hold a 7 foot MH Veritas 2 rod it acts much more like a typical heavy rated rod.  

 

Since you want to throw 1/2 ounce jigs with a typical trailer then that bait will weigh close to 3/4 of an ounce.

A FR 735 will handle that and give you a good rod to throw frogs, carolina rigs and texas rigs.  I personally own a Champion series 705C and it handles all of those baits well. I chose the 7 footer just because the rod locker can not fit a longer rod. Given the opportunity I would have preferred the 7'3" version. It is more than just 3 inches longer, the entire taper is different. 

734 would be good for c rig. I prefer a softer tip for c rig myself.

I don't know which rod you will need but I do know that the 7'0 mh fury is too light for jigs in my opinion. I hope this helps

734 for up to 1/2oz (HARD limit) If you think about going over 1/2 or are in really heavy stuff with your rig, this might not have enough umph.

735 will work very comfortably with 1/2- 1oz weights.

When you say 1/2 oz. hard limit is this just for the jig or jig plus trailer?

A rig fishes "heavier" than a jig.  Since you are dragging a Rig over everything you are not only pulling the mass of the Rig, but dealing with the friction/snags, associated with how you fish a Rig.  A jig doesn't have the same sort of dynamics, they feel "lighter" I guess would be my description.  

 

So to clarify on a C-Rig, a 734 would be ok with whatever plastic craw/lizard/worm, a hook, a bead, a swivel and a MAX of 1/2oz sinker.  Going a little heavier with the sinker, for me, would push into the 735's realm.

 

I didn't like my 734 for jigs over 3/8 (PLUS whatever trailer).  That's just me.

I have jigs in both 3/8oz. and 1/2oz. I was thinking that the 734C would be the perfect rod for these but I'm guessing you wouldn't like it for the 1/2oz?

1/2oz plus trailer is close to 3/4oz total.  I didn't like it, but a lot of guys do.

I use the 704 for my jig and T-rig rod I use 3/8-1/2 oz works great. Although it's the Champion model not the fury. It seem the higher in the lineup you go with Dobyns the closer they are to the power ratings on the rod. That being said I do own the 735 in he fury line and I use it for frogs and C-rigs works great I fish mostly 1/2 oz C-rigs.

Long story short a 5 power Fury will work fine for you
