lower unit oil change, and seal replacement

Featured Replies

i was going to replace my lower unit oil today, and when i drained it, i noticed it had some water in it.... so, i need to replace the seals... but where do i start?? is there a way of knowing which one is broken??

BTW there are no dealers within maybe 1000 miles of where i live.... and the local boat mechanic told me he wont accept more work for the next two months...

i believe changing the one on the propeller shaft is easy.... but i also heard there are about 5 seals and O rings that need to be changed.... where do i start?? i am mechanically inclined but have never tear down a lower unit before... i guess i could inspect the water impeller while i am at it...

i have a 150 hp Johnson from 1994. my Mod number is VJ150ELAXX, i dont know if its RA or RV, as it cant be seen on the tag...
