Oiling/Lubing A New Reel?

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm fairly inexperienced but I have a question. I'm getting a new baitcaster reel in a few weeks, should I oil/lube up my reel as soon as I get it as its not already some from factory? Also, why should I or when should I be oiling/lubing or cleaning my reel?

For me it depends on what type of reel Im getting. IMO it wouldn't hurt anything. Some times reels can have some crap in them from the factory.

Those are pretty basic....you can search for other videos on how to take the whole reel apart....

As for when to clean them...that depends...if I fish some ponds that are kind of "swampy" and have a bunch of green algae I dont want that stuff in my reels so I'll clean them more often.

I will also clean/inspect all of them before a tournament.

Hope this helps

There's a lot of tutorials on YouTube for cleaning reels. Usually reels will come overlubed/greased to get them past the warranty period so I wouldn't worry about the reel not having enough to start, but you can certainly go in and clean out the excess and add some of whatever you prefer. I think for most of us a once-a-season deep cleaning is adequate. If you are going out on fishing trips multiple times a week or fishing in some really nasty water then you might need to do it more.

I'll bet it's already been lubed/oiled from the factory (probably overlubed).  I personally flush and lube my new reels, but for a beginner I'd recommend just go fishing. You want to make sure the reel is in good work in order.
