first boat

Featured Replies

I have been around boats for awhile now but have never operated one on my own before.  I am in the process of getting a fish and ski(Stratos) as my first boat.  I will use it mainly to fish and have the option to bring friends out to ski.  It is a 96 with a 115hp johnson(oil injection).  he is asking 8500 for it.  my first question is do you think that is reasonable(boat in really good shape).  My second question is any tips on how to properly operate a boat, all the way from ulnoading to loading to on the water tips would really be appreciated. thanks  darren

Don't know where you're located, but, I wouldn't consider buying any rig without running it on the water AND having the engine checked by a qualified mechanic. The owner should be willing to take you to the lake and demonstrate the functionality of the rig and all accessories - switches, lights, electronics, pumps, etc. During the demo you should, hopefully, get an idea how to properly launch and load the rig as well as how the owner treats his equipment. With the boat off the trailer, carefully inspect the trailer. You're looking for rust on the frame, excessivly worn tires and grease on the inside of the wheels which indicates a failed seal. Make sure the lights work and the trailer brakes are operational if so equiped. You should be able to get some information on the value of any rig at nada.com or through the loan department of your bank or credit union. I recommend that you get with your local Coast Guard Auxillary and see about any "safe boating" courses they may offer. In the meantime, try to "get acquainted" with your equipment when the lake and ramp are not crowded. Take your time, wear your PFD and use the kill switch. Good luck with your search.

Let me first say, that sounds like an awful lot of money for that boat.  That boat would have to be garage kept and in Mint condition and even then, it sounds like a lot.

Next I would have to be concerned about the size motor on a F/S unless that's only about a 16' boat and absolutely no more than a 17'

As with any boat, you might save yourself a lot of headace by having checked out by a professional.  This can cost you $100 or so, but is money well spent.

Being a 96, it should have a drive on trailer, but for the other questions I would have someone you know that's very familiar with boats go with you to the lake and give you.  Most states also offer very good boater safety courses that would be well worth your time to take.

That sounds high 2 me two.You should be able to get a boat like that  under 7 thousand.I sold a 97 Ranger with a 130hp for $7,500 2 years ago. Just my 2 cent's hope this helps
