Ran mercury motor with oil advance rod disconnecte

Featured Replies

On one of my first trips last year I ran my mercury outboard for 15-20 minutes with the oil advance rod disconnected. I only ran it probably ten minutes at near full throttle. No warnings sounded.  I had been having trouble with the motor the previous day and I had taken the cover off and was poking around. I put the boat in the water on the day mentioned above and it still wasn't right so I took it to a shop. He discoverd the oil advance rod was off which I had inadvertantly knocked off the previous day checking gas line fittings, etc.  The original problem proved to be a bad spark plug which was brand new. He checked the compression and said it was perfect. I haven't had any problems since and I have had the compression checked again by a different mechanic and he said the compression was right on the money. I have used the boat several times since then with no problems. I hope everything is okay. Does anyone out there have any ideas or is there something else I need to check?
