Probably a stupid question but...

Featured Replies

This is probably a very stupid question but I will risk getting flamed to ask it. Years ago I bought a simple little baitcaster combo from Bass Pro. It came with an Abu Garcia 6.5 foot medium heavy rod. Obviously the guide loops are on the top of the pole. I have an open face spinning reel I would like to use with this pole. I assume there is not problem with me flipping it over and have the guide loops facing down, correct?

While spinning rods do indeed have the guides on the bottom of the blank, they have much, much larger 1st guides, and gradual smaller guides as they get further away from the reel.

This is because the line comes off the spinning reel in big loops instead of a straight line like baitcasters.  The line would slap against the small guides on a baitcast rod, greatly reducing casting distance (if it didn't tangle). This why there's a series of large-to-small guides on spinning rods.

Oh, and why are the guides on the bottom on spinning rods and on the top for baitcasters?  Here's why:

Hope that helps!

It does help a lot, thanks! Been thinking about buying my wife a new spinning rod combo for casual fishing. Do they still make reels that have the trigger on it to make opening the bail easier to cast? I don't think she would let me buy a new one for her without it LOL

Shimano still does, the Spirex and it's available as a front drag or rear drag version.  happy wife = happy life.:D

Shimano Spirex is tough as they come! Always liked that quick fire trigger!
