trimming motor

Featured Replies

Hello,

What is the proper way to trim the motor upon hole shot?  I know it should be trimmed one way for the hole shot, then adjusted while cruising.  thanks

Larry

I dont know if there is a written rule on one particular way. Form my experience its very boat dependant..but this is how I do it generally:

Trim it all the way down before taking off. Once it starts getting on plane start trimming it up. You will feel the boat rise more and start to get on its pad. During this process you may hear or feel the prop slip. If so, let off the trim for a second so the boat settles. The prop slipping will vary according to water conditions (smooth, choppy, etc) Until your comfortable with this, I wouldnt go into any turns while adjusting the trim from a holeshot.

Again every boat is different but i can feel when the boat is on its pad just in how the steering feels (its not too loose, but definitely dont have to muscle a turn).  Do you understand what plowing and porpoising is?

And then after all that you get to learn how to adjust your trim and jackplate while coming out of a 180 holeshot....

Hale is right on target. I tuck my motor all the way under give it full throttle and as I come up on plane back off the throttle a bit and trim until I hit the sweet spot which you can hear. Also you will not have any steer torque. My boat will go straight down the lake without really holding the wheel.

When I'm set up this way I can run from about 3800 rpm to wide open throttle without any further trim adjustment. If you back the throttle off and start to porpoise you have two choices, 1) trim under a bit or 2) increase the throttle.

When you watch boats go down the lake I would say more than half are trimmed out to far. They are throwing a high rooster tail when the majic height is usually about as high as the top of your motor.
