I'm a long time outdoorsman, been fishing since I was old enough to walk pretty much. My patience has been tested lately. I started fishing for bream an old school way to me. I bought me some crickets got out my ultra lite spinning set ups that I use for trout. And I have had a ton of success.  Round clip on bobber,  small split shot or 2 if I want to get any distance and a standard long shank cricket hook.   Usually setup about 3 foot deep.  Bluegill hammer it, i actually was physically tired of catching them 2 nights ago. But casting that setup using lite line like that gets wrapped around the bobber every few cast. You know it when the bobber is floating sideways. There has got to be an easier way. .

Try a slip float, they take longer to rig but cast much better

Can some explain how to set up a slip rig.  I have not used corks or bobbers since I was a kid.

My wife and I use the old bobber and worms for panfish often.  Try several things to try.

First we use the inexpensive pencil style bobbers.  We go thru the bobber then to a swivel. We use a short leadr maybe 12 to 16 inches and then the hook. I add a few pinch on weights on the leader.  I try to keep the leader relatively short so I am able to adjust the depth with the bobber on the main line.  Walmart sells some from South Bend for like $1.98 that work good.  Wing it makes some nice ones too.

 

   

These are cheap and work well.  I like the black colored swivels to keep line twist down.  A light sidearm lob should help too.  We own 2 5 1/2 ultralights that we use for bluegill, crappie and white perch.  It usually does not take long to get a mess of them for dinner.
