Grass Mat Rookie

Featured Replies

2 acre pond in Wadsworth OH. New to fishing grass mats. I've been using a 3/8 tungsten weight with a Texas rig, and it gets hung up under the mat every time. The water is about 5-8 feet. I've also tried frogging it. No luck. When the pond is clear of the grass mats I can pull smallies out with no issues. Please help!

I would continue to frog it. Vary your retrieves up until you figure out how they want it.

Think Vertical

Try to keep your casts or pitches as near vertical as possible.

Most anglers try forcing a t-rigs/jigs through grass which is all wrong, you gotta finesse em through grass!

When you feel it starting to load up in the grass...stop. Release pressure, pull up until you feel heaviness again but apply slightly more pressure, then release, continue until it breaks free. You want the motion to be similar to & as fast as working a shaky head, you're just applying more pressure.

Might need to upgrade that weight to 3/4 ounce or maybe 1 ounce flipping weight with a flipping hook and punch those mats. Heavy rod!
