Anyone spybaiting in shallow water.

Featured Replies

I this is more of a deeper water, suspending fish type of presentation.  Anyone fishing it in sat 5' or less. Along grass lines or slow rolling it super slow over submerged grass?

Thanks!

The baits I've thrown - (Duo Realis) Do not lend themselves to a shallow water approach.

For me, in order to get the most out of the bait, it's a light line, fairly slow retrieve deal.  Doing this, the bait sinks quite a bit & pretty quickly, even when the retrieve is started right away.

Only way I see being able 'to keep' it shallow (less than 10ft), would be to either use heavier line (mono) and/or speed up the retrieve.

Both of these have been bite killers for me, at least on smallies in clear water, which is the only way I've fished this bait so far.

YMMV.

Thanks @A-Jay I kind of figured as much, but know nothing about the presentation really other than a few videos.

Think light line (about 6 pound test) and slow retrieve. It's definitely not for everyone.

Works very well shallow in St. Lawrence. I imagine that the current helps.

I have caught them shallow on it even in stained water, but at least the 90 size (I don't have a lot of time with the 80) sinks fairly fast which means you'll have to reel fast too.

Matt Allen did a video on the duo and the jackall spinbaits. I seem to vaguely recall him saying something about fishing grasslines with them. Check that one out. Might give you a few ideas.

I use spybaits shallow all the time. I fish the "wrong" if there's such a thing. I run them just subsurface and they'll come up and take it a lot like they would a weightless fluke. Actually Gene just did a video where he talks about using one. He doesn't go into much depth about it, but throws it when they're schooling - that means it'd be deeper water, but I imagine if they're feeding on the surface you'd run it just below the water.

So 6lb is the line weight people like for this technique?  I have a pair of spybaits but only keep line that light on my L and UL spinning rods, so I have never fished them.
