motor question??

Featured Replies

I took the boat out on Sunday.  We went to lake yale in Eustis Florida.  My motor (ETEC 200) was running pathetic.  It would not go into gear up by the doc.  I cant figure out what the problem is.  This particular doc is at the end of a long tree lined canal.  Its only about 2.5 feet deep and the water is very murky and filled with stuff from the trees and such.  The motor would idle fine but when i went to put it in gear it would just die.  So we trolled on out of the canal and started fishing for a while.  Then i decided to try and start again.  We are now in open water.  It idles fine but died twice before i finally told my buddy to hang on and as soon as i got it in gear i jammed it and got on plane.  I felt like if i could just run it it would clean itself out.  It ran just fine after that until we got back to the doc.  Then it started doing the same darn thing.  Any ideas what the problem was?  The weather was very humid, very foggy.  I did flush the motor when i got home and it seemed to idle just fine.  one other question, once i flush the motor how can i check and see if there is any debris that can harm the motor.  Also, how can i clean out the pisser on the back of the motor?  Thanks for your help folks!!

Sorry but there is just not a whole lot of checking anything on that motor without the software and a computer. Could easily be a TPS, temp sensor or if the motor sat for a few months, could just be bad gas. If it has sat, change the filter, dump the gas, put about 15 gallons in and a can of seafoam and go cruising until you burn most of that gas out. One thought, check with the dealer on the seafoam, with the piston temps the Etec run, might need to be sure it's safe to run an additive like seafoam.

There should be a hose going from the motor to the Ptube, take if off the P tube and clean it out.

One thought, if you're in an area that runs alcohol in the gas, might want to try another fuel filter.  You will go through bunches of fuel filters with any to the ethanol,/methanol gasolines.  They hold water and they desolve the old gasoline residues from the tanks, giving your fuel filter on these motors hell.

The carbs might be gummed up. Mine used to idle fine, but would die when I tried to back it off the trailer. I had to pay $300 to get the carbs cleaned. You might be able to spray and clean them out yourself. I permanently keep Sta-Bil in my gas now.

It's a 100% gurantee the carbs are not gummed.  I don't have any.  Etecs are direct fuel injected.   If stored for long a long period of time without being properly conditioned for storage, the injectors can get gummed, and that's about $1000 to have them removed, sent off to be cleaned and recalibrated and put back on and the ECM recalibrated.

About the only thing he can do himself is change the fuel filter.

I should have said carbs or injectors. Anyway, once cleaned, the Sta-Bil will stop the gumming from happining again.
