Livewell

Featured Replies

I'm going to start re-modding my 14ft V hull here shortly, and I had a question about putting in the livewell.

I know most everyone uses a large Igloo cooler, why the cooler?  From what I've priced they are about $50.  Why couldn't you use say a 18 gallon rubber made storage bin?  Is it that the sides aren't as stiff as the cooler or is it the fact the cooler is insulated?  If so does it have to be insulated?  Wouldn't the pump rotating the water keep the water temp even and ok for the lunkers in there?

Thanks in advance.

Jon

I have the same question, but i'm trying to make a release well. If anyone could help me out by giving me some instructions on how to make one it would be very appreciated.

Thanks Shawn

There are some good reasons why an Igloo cooler is beter. First and formost is the plastic is a better quality. Rubbermaid containers can become brittle very quickly. Second is the insulation. Insulated livewells are better for the fish. It takes less ice and less work to keep the water cool in the summer time. This reduces stress on the fish and gives them a better chance of serviving after they are released. If you don't want to spend the money get the larges blue chemicle barrel you can find and cut it down to size. This will last alot longer than a Rubbermaid.

Another option is a Toho-Rig Livewell, Bass Pro sells them for $179..

It's a little pricey but comes with basically everything, divided livewell, pump, spray bar, straps to secure it inside boat.

I've used a large cooler for years but dividing it for 2 angler's fish has been the major drawback for me. I've had several dividers rigged up but the fish thrashing around broke them all.

The Toho I bought will solve that. I'm doing some mods to the Toho such as using a different pump and spray bar, then I'm making a fill and pump out device with the pump which comes with the Toho.

I will echo what has been already said, a cooler will do a good job for you, better than a Rubbermaid container, if that is the way you have to go.

Yep. Those Rubbermaids will not last very long. They'll get brittle and crack. Add up what it will cost you with the cooler, pump, hoses and all the other parts, and the Toho will probably be a better way to go.

That is what I made my live wells out of. I don't think their "rubber maid" not sure what co. But they are 18 gal each, clear, and have a split lid , wich is nice. have had them in for 5 years now, and no problems. not brittle. still plyable. have them under deck. don't leak(unless over filled). very nice and big, have only lost 2 fish since i started using them.

I have pump in, pump out, recirq,  drain and overflo in them. they worked great. Tried those rubbermaid ones. they are black with a red or grey top on them. Heavy duty for outside use. they didn't work well. As soon as I can figure out how to post pitcures on this site, I'll post some of the livewells.
