Tagging largemouth bass in draining lake

Featured Replies

I live on a 200 acre lake here in middle Georgia. Ive caught hundreds of largemouth bass (my personal best being 9 pounds) and within the past few months they have started draining the lake to make repairs to the dam.

I have a masters degree in aquatic ecology so naturally I am worried about the fish and other life in this lake. This lake has always been known for its surplus amount of largemouths, and I am looking to tag and release any bass that I catch to ensure that the fish aren't being harmed or affected negatively during this lowering of the water level.

Is there anyone out there who knows any websites who sell a kit allowing me to tag and personally I.D. any fish I catch that would be a great help. My university won't let me borrow any tags because the lake is not near the universities location.

Thanks for any help,

-Jake

We tag fish here in southern indiana. I will ask my friend and his dad what type of gun and tags they use this weekend if you don't have an answer by then.

Google "fish tagging kit".  There are a bunch of them listed.

All I know is that is illegal to tag fish here in maine,  but I'm sure you know your rules. I am interested in this topic though,  they just drained a small mill pond/river in my area this weekend to do a repair. It's where I caught my PB this spring. Virtually nobody fishes it..  Because it's a flooded stream, there's a channel of course. it drained down in about a day and filled back up the next day after the repair. It was only about a foot low at the bridge upstream where we would carry in, but 6' low at the dam.  Probably only about 4' to 6' of water left in the small channel.. but I was very curious of any effects this would cause?  There wouldn't be an oxygen problem I would assume because of the inflow of water,  my place is probably all set I would think because of the short time period,  but what are the concerns you know of?
