Hello all.

 

I have a pedal kayak and I was curious, what do you guys wear in terms of footwear and pants when it starts to get cooler out?

 

I fish mostly smaller sized lakes and I don't plan on going out if the high for the day is any cooler than the high 40's. I generally don't wade in anything much deeper than mid calf, so I was thinking something like this might work...

Along with that...

Smart wool socks and base layer pants.

I have some lightweight nylon water resistant quick dry pants and insulated waterproof snow pants that I'll use for my outer layer depending on how cold it is.

When things get cold I'd get some lightweight breathable sockfoot waders and some nice wading boots.

I just spent morning in low 50's with wind. Used my waist high Simms wading pants and wading boots. Was comfortable until temp got in mid 60's.

 

I have Hobie pro and no problem peddling with them, second time did it.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I actually went with something very similar to what I was originally considering. I figure if it doesn't work out then I'm really not out anything. I can still use the base layer along with the boots with a pair of dry pants/waders if needed.

I fish straight through the winter here in Maryland. Water temps in the mid 30's to low 40's are common with matching air temperatures. Once the sum of the air temperature plus the water temperature is 120 degrees or less I wear a dry suit.

A dry suit is the smart way to go.  It may save your life. Don't mess around when your life may depend on it.

I completely agree with what you're saying. I'm not planning on going out when it's cold. If I find myself wanting to fish when it's colder I'll definitely consider purchasing one. I just need something for the fall and spring where my sandals, convertible pants and huk shirts won't cut it.

 

Honestly, I don't know how you all do it when it's really cold. I mean, I can keep my body warm, but my hands are a serious problem. I did get some pretty nice glacier gloves, but I don't foresee those being the be all end all.

Rememeber that it doesn't have to be all that cold before hypothermia sets in. If you flip in 45 - 50 degree water and for some reason you can't get back in the boat, you might not have enough time to be rescued if you are far enough from shore.  if you flip in 60 degree water with 45 degree air temps, you can be in trouble even if you do get back in your boat.
