bought my first bought

Featured Replies

I'm buying my first boat, it is a 15 ft. crestliner with a 40 h.p. johnson electric start. it has sort of a center consol with a casting deck in the front and back with pedistal seats. it has a livewell and lots of storage. the boat is an aluminum v-hull. I want to get a trolling motor for it, i want a bow mount i dont mind getting hand control, but what would you reccomend for #s of thrust. I know everyone says buy the best you can get but im only 15 so i have to still buy a vehicle. i am wondering if a 40# would be suitable. It is great having a part time job and having no expenses, i dont drive and i live at home :)

Thank you

Yeah, you should be able to get by with 40#.  When I was searching for one for my 15 foot Lund, the suggested range was 40 - 55.  I think your boat is a mod V or a shallower V than my deep vee, so it should do you fine.  BTW.  I know how you feel money wise.  I am 14.  But, I was only able to pay for a 12 foot Vee with 4hp.  The Lund is more of a family boat. (Or will be when we finish restoring it.  Right now, it is just taking up driveway space)

I would look more at a 50# thrust, this will help you move around better on windy days. Being a aluminum boat the wind will blow it around more than a glass boat.

A 50# thrust will not be much more in cost, and parts are easier to find for that size.
