GLIDE STRIPS ON TRAILER BUNKS

Featured Replies

Hello,

Has anyone tried the glide strips for their trailer bunks?  They are suppose to provide a smooth, slick surface for the boat to slide on.

I think it is sort of a cheap alternative to roller bunks.

thanks

Larry

The next time you have the boat off the trailer, spray the carpet on the bunks with silicon spray and let it dry while you are fishing. This will make the boat slide easier.

Friend of mine has them on both his trailers and luvs them.   He had to use a double row of them on his Astro's bunk boards and a single row on his 15' Fisher tin can's bunks.  He loads and unloads by himself 95% of the time and says they make it much easier.

I haven't tried them personally becuase I'm seldom by my self and even then I drive on and off the trailer so I never have to push it and seldom have to use the winch for anything more than locking it down so have never seen a real need for them.

Never used them but I've heard that you never, ever unhitch the boat from the winch till the back of the boat is at the water.  I've been told a boat will literally slide right off a trailer on steep enough ramps.

Cart, I seen this happen to a guy with a brand new Ranger that hadn't been in the water yet. ;) Beautiful black and green glass boat just laying on the concrete ramp. The sad part was watching him winch it back on while it was scraping the concrete. :'(

And it's a whole lot cheaper than glide strips.  Take a cheap can of spray silicone from Wallyworld and spray your bunkers after you launch.  It doesn't take the whole can, either.  The only caveat I'll give you is DO NOT loosten the winch strap until the trailer is backed into the water.  Believe me, it will slide right off.  One application will last practically all season.

Pledge, the spray wax your wife uses, works well to

I've also witnessed a boat zing right on off a trailer at a steep ramp. 17 foot aluminum rig w/ 70 hp jet outboard lying on the ramp was not a pretty sight. Needless to say this guy did not have the glide strips on his trailer the next time I saw him.

Thanks for your replies.

HPPB,

Your comment about using the stuff my wife uses confuses me.  Why would I put Bons Bons on my trailer?

thanks

Larry

i have glide strips and it makes it really easy to launch and load up especially. just gotto leave it strapped till its in the water a bit so there no dock slide offs

i also have glide strips, and it really does make it really easy to launch and load up. just have to remember to leave it strapped until its halfway in the water so it wont slide off the trailer, and loading is super easy. imho
