Which Rod

Featured Replies

I have decided on getting a BPS Carbonlite rod as my new Frog rod. Should I go for the 7' MH/F or the 7' H/XF. Normally I use a little shorter rod like a 6'9" but I'm going to give a 7' a try now.

I have a 7'6 MH/F , it works well in any type of weeds. Like you I prefer a 6'9 is rod. My regret is I wish I would have gotten a shorter rod

Do you have a dedicated jig rod yet. Do you fish Carolina rigs? I would pick the MH, I just like versatility.

I do have a dedicated Jig Rod that when I occasionally throw C-Rig I use. I am one of those that has a Dedicated rod for every application. I broke the tip on my previous frog rod and rather buy a new than replace my old one.

I prefer heavy power rods for frogs because of the slop, weeds and pads I have to pull the fish through.

I say go with the heavy, they are thick rods but after just holding them in the store I can tell the heavy is going to have enough extra backbone that I wouldn't pick the MH over it for frogs

With frogs, I also generally prefer a fast tip to an extra fast tip.  To me, the added sensitivity doesn't mean much when I'm dragging it through weeds, trees, etc and likely going to see the strike.  The slightly slower action still provides good sensitivity, an easy hook set, perhaps additional casting distance, and a less brittle tip.  Normally, I don't think much about a tip being super brittle, but frog fishing often consists of reeling in as much weeds as fish when I hook up, and I hate cursing broken rods.  Also, MH and H vary a lot.  Some guys swear by extra heavy rods, while other manufacturers like St. Croix and Fenwick tend to fish heavier than their ratings.  Most of my frogging is done with a St. Croix Legend Elite MH or a Fenwick Aetos MH and I'm happy with both.

How soft is the tip on the H XF, do you feel like it could walk a frog?  I use a H XF for frogs and it is fantastic at it but not all rods of the same rating bend the same.

It is most  definitely stiffer than what I am used to. I use a Med Mod Fast for other walking baits and walking is a breeze with that rod.

I am going to assume you do not currently have a MH/F rod already, so I would go that route as you can use it for other things. I use a MH/F rod for frogs and it's fine where I fish it, but places I fish don't have the thickest weeds out there by any means.
