Skittish fish in crystal clear quarries

Featured Replies

Alright guys, I know this topic has been covered, but every spots different.  I reguarily fish a quarry that I figure can't be deeper than 20 or so feet. I hit weed beds dead center on a 10-14 feet crank bait, I can't tell for sure but I can guess it's 15-30 feet dead center. The water itself is clear, and it's fished often. My question is what should I be doing differently. The rock walls are too far away to reach from one point and one rock wall doesn't start until about 15 feet into water where it cuts off 1 foot to, just open open water. I know fish are in there, they just don't bite.

First of all , topwaters are awesome in Clearwater lakes. Second jerkbaits and swimbaits as well.  Hair jigs. Make long cast on windy days and burn a spinnerbaits fast just under the surface over submerged weed beds. Carolina rig a one ounce and reach those walls with a big 10 " worm. Senkos wacky style on slack days try fishing early and late or after dark

Top water in itself is an absolute blast , but the fish might be fussy to the hooks. I've talked to people before and they said the fish won't bite if they can see the metal of the hook, which for the most part has proved right. And with the amount of rocks and walls in the water, getting caught is another threat, along with all the leaves in a backwater Indiana quarry.

quarries are one of the least known honey-holes when it comes to numbers and size. they can be very hard to fish, because they are so unique when compared to other waters.

As my name suggests, I have become quite skilled in fishing clear water rock w=quarries, like the one you fish. If the edge of the quarry is steep, that is where the fish will be. If the water is clear, expect the fish to be feeding visually. When sight fishing, look to see if the fish are spooked by your casts. If they aren't, throw a white spook or sexy shad crank bait WITH rattles. If they are spooked, throw a 1/8 oz texas rig, with a 1/0 hook (VMC Sureset is best) and a purple or natural zoom finesse worm. This is the all-time best quarry bait. As for this rod, a medium or medium light fast action spinning rod is best. Get a reel with a good drag. light line and clear water you'll need it. use x<10 lb yellow braid on your reel. and a 6 lb leader that is 2' longer than the visibility, even if its 20', use a 25' leader. Make a cast near the bank or out deep. close bail with rod tip high and line tight. the bait will pendulum back to you and you can fish vertically this way. Another good idea for that is an ul dropshot, gold inline spinner, or light ned rig with white worm. pink is good if fish arent spooky. Use a frog, swim jig, or craw near the grass. jerkbait is great in open water.

Trust me, if you do this word for word, you will catch fish. And lots of em. I have caught over 750 bass this year in quarries alone. all on those techniques.

ps where are you located, as each region mines for different minerals in different ways.

Keep in mind that many people die each year from quarry accidents. Do not go in the water. i could write a million pages on why you need to be safe, with personal experience as proof, but i don't want to give you PTSD.

hope this helps. lmk if you need more advice

Fish a fluke fast on the surface, use a red hook simulate blood. If you are fishing fast because of clear water they don't get a good look.   Trick worm is great weightless too. Run the worm an inch up the line Texas style then zara spook it

Don't wear bright colored clothes, if you can see the fish they can see you, if the water is clear the fish can see you. Wear camo. A hummingbird portable fish finder were we cast out the probe will tell you the depths and the bottom structure, then you know what depth to run the deeper running baits at.

Take line size with a grain of salt. I've walked 20+ sacks of bass in gin clear lakes with 65 pound braid tied direct. Fished Carolina with an ounce sinker for smallmouth in water you could see the bottom 65 ft. Down. Power fishing works in clear water too. Don't cut yourself short.

I fished a hidden pond that's spring feed deep in the woods. The water is the clearest I've ever fished. Nothing was working. I could see moving black lines in the water they were big bass. I put on a rebel bug in bumble bee. I hooked a large bluegill as I reeled it in a big bass was charging towards it, I pulled it out of the water just intime. Then I caught on there main diet was panfish.
