Worth adding jackplate for installing Minn Kota Talons?

Featured Replies

When I eventually buy a new boat I'd like to have dual Minn Kota Talons on it. The boat would most likely be something like a Ranger 621FS which a lot of people say don't need a jackplate. I was thinking about having a jackplate added for 2 reasons; one so that the keeps the motor farther away from the back seat angler and less chance of it getting scratched/hit which happened to my current boat and 2 because I could add the Talons without drilling more holes into the transom. A friend said that his friends have had some problems with Power Poles/Talons getting ripped off of the back of boats because they aren't using big enough washers or plates on the transom, I want to avoid this.

So, would it be worth it adding a jackplate for this purpose?

And, why isn't a jackplate necessary on a boat like this but it is standard on many bass boats?

Would a jackplate negatively affect performance on a boat like the 621FS?

The reason you would install a jackplate is for performance and/or running/taking off in shallow water. It is not a necessary accessory on a bass boat. A bass boat will work fine without one. Minn Kota makes a sandwich bracket which allows you to mount the Talon in between the motor and hull.

I have a Talon without a jp. sandwich bracket will be fine.P1000439_edited-1.jpg.610a82bc16d8f09a83a61b1ed8b1650d.jpg
