tips for fishing from a boat.

Featured Replies

95% of my fishing is from the shore or in my partners little 2 man boat.  In the little boat we paddle b/c he can't get off his arse and go by a trolling motor :;).  Anyways on the rare opportunity that I do get to go out on a big boat I have trouble fishing soft plastics.  It seems like I get behind. I cast out and by the time I hop the bait a time or two it seems I no longer have slack in my line from the boat continously moving.  Which obviously makes it impossible to tell if the lines moving or the boat is pulling it, besides the fact that i'm no longer fishing my soft plastic properly.  Is there a trick to being able to fish soft plastic correctly from a boat.

If the boat is continually moving, I'd say your partner probably isn't fishing soft plastics.  It's very tough to fish SP from the back of the boat when the guy on the TM is flipping a jig or tossing a spinnerbait or shallow running crank, etc.

I suggest rather than trying to throw out and work the worm back to the boat that you pitch to a specific target.  Most likely if a fish is present and active, they'll grab it on the drop or the first hop or two.  Of course, I've pitched to one target as many as a dozen times before getting bit.  If they're that crabby and the boat is moving right along, well, you're kinda SOL if you get my drift... ;)

If he won't get off his lazy arse to go spend $200+ on a trolling motor, get off your own lazy arse and buy the trolling motor yourself or spend $15 on an anchor and you won't drift anymore.

This has happened to me, too.

I agree that the best course of action is to throw what the guy working the trolling motor is throwing, but in a different color or bait style.  Or exactly the same lure or color.

When I do pitch a plastic worm from the back of the boat, I do it fast and at specific targets. if the guy in the front of the boat is throwing a crankbait or spinner bait, etc.

I have asked guys to slow down and they usually do unless we are hunting for fish and then we want to cover a lot of water. Ifyou all are trying to locate fish then throw a fish-finding type of bait, such as a crankbait and find out where the fish are and talk about your presentations to coordinate your efforts.

This situation is frustrating but it is part of bass fishing so just do your best.

LOL.........settle down Boro. I meant to say battery. He has a motor already. The above mentioned lazy arse has been my best friend forever. We went to school K-12 together. I have offered to by the battery in fact. I'm just busting his chops a little, we have an anchor.
