Rope for trolling motor

Featured Replies

What is the best kind of rope to use for my trolling motor, it seems like they break every year and always at the worst time.

Lawnmower recoil starter pull rope in the largest diameter you can get to fit.

Uh, Er, Um, unless you have a very old trolling motor, you don't need a rope to start it.  It runs off a battery.  ;D

haha, thats a good one LM.   " I know its getting fire. I touched the wires to my tongue. "

No its a new trolling motor(70 lb digital) on an old gator mount. It has been eating a rope per yr. I'll try the lawn mower pull rope. Thanks

Rig it with a stainless steel cable.  You will get more than one year for sure.

;)

Stainless will cut into the frame of the mount like a saw, been there done that, sounds good, but a look see at the rops every once in a while will pervent it breaking at a inopertune moment. When I see mine fraying I pull it thru and retie cutting off the tail, this will work about 3 times before it is to short. I picked up a roll of the lawn mower rope and it rests quiet comfortable in the bow storage compartment. It's a PIA to unlatch the trolling motor and get it stowed when that happens and yes it is usually during a tournament.

Your right Flatfish, I looked at the rope the day before it broke and thought, I need to put a new rope on next week. I thought about using the rope I use on my brush piles, rubber clothes line. It has wire inside of it and doesnt get weak and rot, but I didnt think it would slide through the grommet very well. I'll try the mower rope. Im afraid stainless steel cable would get against on of my rods on a long run and nick the line or scratch the boat.

Lawn mower rope works for me too.  I keep an extra one stowed on the boat as well.  Never fails when you need it most it breaks.

every year it breaks???

something cutting it? is it rubbing somewhere?

I think I might try spraying it down with a UV protector as well...maybe that will slow its decay.
