I own a 10ft Jon Boat which I haul around in the back of my truck. I dont have any electronics on it yet and so for the time being thought of a plan to guage the depth of water I am fishing in.

Using the line to my anchor as a tool,I measured it out in 10ft Increments. At every 10 ft mark I tied an overhand knot. I know this isnt going to be perfectly accurate,and is very prehistoric,but does anyone think it will work,for me to get an idea of what depth of water im sitting in?

Thus far I have made a discovery. I have let my anchor go to the bottom in the lake I fish and it seems super deep. I normally have plenty of anchor line left over though.

Well wouldnt ya know it, My anchor line measured out is 60ft long and when im anchored and think im fishing super deep water,im probably only in 40 feet of water.

I gotta try this out and see just how deep im "not" fishing.

It is old fashioned, but old fashioned still works.

A slightly more accurate idea would be to put a knot every 5 feet (or 2 feet if you want). You would have to take out all of your current knots though.

For maximum accuracy you have to make a knot after every measurement. Otherwise your knots are going to take up some of that length.

I have done the same thing with a Magic Marker stripe every 5 ft.

single stripe =5ft

double stripe =10

triple stripe =15

and so on. I dont have to count knots on the way down.

3 oz. pyramid sinker, onto a rope I would put knots in the rope every 5 feet and spray em red

My Favorite way WHEN FISHIN WITH AVID and no electronics on board. I say Wow look at that Diawa Reel in the water, when he gets up to look over the side SHAKE THE BOAT .When he falls in 2 options if he can stand up WATER DEPTH LESS THAN 6 Feet

1) If he has weeds stuck to him>Trigged weithgtless plastics

2) No weeds.shallow crank in crawfish

If he is treading water> 6ft Deep cranks and jigs

After Avid gets back in the boat and kicks your Italian Azz, do you start fishing for catfish with blood-baits? ;D
