spray painting lures

Featured Replies

I have some new jerkbait lures that I like, but they do not make the color I want. Can I just use a spray can and paint the back and bottom to my desired color? These are brand new baits, so is there any prep before spraying? Do I need to do a final coating of clear to protect? Sorry about all the questions, I have never tried this before and was just curious. Thank You.

You can paint most any hard lure out there.  As far as prep, it's always a good idea to go over the lure with fine sandpaper to give some "tooth" for the new paint to stick to, especially if the finish is really glossy and slick.  You don't HAVE to clearcoat, but it gives a nice shiny finish and helps keep the scratches and wear down.

Have done this many times.....Sally Hansens Hard as nails is good....also use the paint from Walmart or True Value that says is good with plastics.   Not fancy but has made some Jerks fish well.....very well.

Thanks guys, I never thought of the nail polish idea. That should work really well for my application. As always, this forum is a true wealth of information from guys who have tried everything in the pursuit of bass.

I spray paint my lures and it works fine. I do use a epoxy clear coat. I use a 2 ton epoxy with a 30 minute work time. I have a album with spray painted handmade lures if you want to view it.
