Hi Guys,

 

Looking for some feedback on these two specific rods for Texas Rigging plastics and maybe some Spinner bait throwing.  The KLX Carolina/Texas/Worm 7'0" Medium Heavy (KLXTCRWJ70MH ) or the Dobyns Champion 734 SH.  Any of you own these sticks and use them for T-Rigs?  I would mostly be fishing the reservoirs here in central ohio from a boat. Not a lot of vegetation so mostly 1/4 ounce weighted soft plastics with some weightless tossed around laydowns and rip rap.

 

If anyone has some feedback on which would be better suited I would really appreciate it.

Probably not much help, but I own and use both. I primarily use them for 1/4 to 1/2 T-Rigs and jigs. I love both of them, but would probably give the nod to the KLX in the sensitivity department. You cannot go wrong with either one though.

With the Kistler sale right now if you could afford it I’d suggest the Helium 3 7’1”or 7’4” MH XF over either option. 

I have not used the Dobyns but I do own every model line of Kistler. The use the exact model of KLX you are referring to for my t-rigs and small jigs. I like the suggestion @kschultz76 gave but would say go for the KLX Feel N Reel over the Helium 3 to save a little dough with the sale right now.

Dobyns are good but Kistler has them beat on sensitivity.

 

I would choose the magnesium 3 with the Kistler sale.

Are you sure you meant KLX Feel N Reel, that’s a graphite/glass hybrid rod built specifically for crankbaits.

 

I have KLX and Helium 3 rods, the increased sensitivity and faster taper of the Helium 3 is worth the small price difference all day long for any bottom contact presentations. At least in my opinion. 

For what it's worth, I really like my Champions - the balance, feel, actions, and aesthetics are great.  However, there are more sensitive sticks at that price point.  After quite a bit of research I picked up two He3s this winter for bottom contact techniques, but haven't had a chance to fish them yet.  For me, sensitivity was a top priority and at 20% off the He3 was a clear winner.

Thanks to all for the input. I actually asked the same question to Trey over at Kistler regarding the H3 and the KLX. He said the KLX was the rod for me. I told him it would mostly be 1/4 to 1/2 Texas rigged plastic along with an occasional spinner bait and he said it was an easy decision. Even with the close price difference due to the sale. When I asked him about the H3 being the better rod for my needs his exact quote was

 

“Not really, the KLXTCRWJ70MH is best trust me. Never mind the label specs”

 

I guess when you get something like that straight from the horses mouth you can’t really get any better. I pulled the trigger on the KLX based on this along with the feedback here in this forum.

The KLX has a more versatile taper. You'll be happy with the rod for your t-rig and spinner baits.

Congratulations on your KLX purchase.  That's a great rod.  Most of my rods are Kistlers, and most are from the KLX line.  I will continue to buy them.  And Kistler has some great sales at times.  One time, they had a "buy a KLX rod and get a Carbon Steel rod free" sale!  I picked up two new KLX rods that I love and expected to keep the Carbon Steels as back-ups.  After trying them out, they ended up on the starting team with the KLXs.
