Hi all,

received my reel this morning and put it out the box and directly noticed some very distinct grinding noise (sounds a bit like a cobra that hisses). I have not noticed this with any other reel that I have (including Metanium MGL). I am wondering if this sound comes from the brass gears. To me it sounds a bit like the spool is touching the frame slightly when moving.

Anybody else with this experience?

These gears require heavy greasing because of their micro configuration.  if greasing doesn't solve the problem send it back to Shimano and they will correct the problem. Delaware Tackle on here is an expert on reels and he may have better advise.

Mine kinda sounded like that before I put line on it. Then it sounded smoother when spoiled up. 

 

Its normal for these to get louder after use and deep cleaning. Right out of the box I'd lean toward swapping it.
