Dobyns Fury H or MH?

Featured Replies

I'm going to buy a Dobyns Fury and will be using it mainly for pitching heavy cover.  Right now I'm looking at the heavy model but I was also thinking I may use it for jigging deep structure as well.  Would the heavy have a sensitive enough tip for that or should I just use another rod and make the Dobyns Heavy for pitching only?

For pitching, flipping  and casting a jig weighing more than a 1/4 ounce (plus a typical trailer) I would choose  the Fury 735C.  That rod is rated as a "mag heavy". It would be your more versatile rod.  The 765 is a great rod, but it is not quite as versatile, it is however a great flipping stick.  A friend of mine has both and I have had an opportunity to play with both. The 703 and 704s are way way to light duty to fish a jig or texas rig in the cover you would normally flip or pitch a lure into.   The bonus to a 735C is you can frog with it too.

I used a 765 fury for all of the above. Was able to pitch 1/8 oz weight all the way up to ounce and a quarter. Now I use a champ 735 for 1/8 to about 3/4

735c or 765c seem to be the best two options.   Like fishnkamp says, I think the 735c will be a lot more versatile, but that is the only one of those 2 that I own so take that with a grain of salt.  If you don't want versatility and just a flippin' stick, the 765 seems the way to go.

I think I'm set on the 7'3" Mag Heavy.
