Johnson FICHT Motors

Featured Replies

Anybody here have a FICHT Motor on their bassboat?  I was about to buy the 2002 Nitro I posted in the other thread and a 1997 Nitro 170TF with a 2005 Johnson 115 FICHT Outboard became available too.  I'm just wondering if anyone here has experience with this motor?  I can buy it for less than the other rig so any info appreciated.  TIA.  ;)

im pretty sure the last year for the FICHT was 01 or 02. if its an 05 its likely an ETEC.

Here's a pic so you tell me if it's a FICHT or ETEC?  ETEC would be great but I thought they came out in 2006.  It also says Saltwater Series on it.

Nice boat if possible get a compression check and take it out for a test drive. I had a freind recently took out his boat a charger with a 90 horse mercury i believe said he heard a knocking sound didn't think anythin of it. They took the boat out and came back without a cover for the motor they BLEW it off, said they heard a loud bang from the engine and it was gone. Glad I wasn't along.

I think that is just a regular 2 stroke motor. a V 4 115 HP

I agree here.  Beginning around 2000 model year (give or take a year), all Ficht engines were Evinrudes.  Same goes for E-TEC motors.  The Johnsons are just regular, carbed 2-strokes.

And there is nothing wrong with a 2 stroke carb motor. Those V4's are great motors they have been around for years and years. Infact I am looking at maybe replacing my motor with one of those V4's. Just make sure that the waters you plan of fish have no restriction on style of motors being used. around here in Pa, there are no restriction and you can use what ever you want, but in some states, or lakes you can only use a 4 stroke or newer Clean 2 stroke ( like a opti, or Fincht, Etech). Just check your local boating laws.

That's a carburated motor, not a ficht or E-tec. All two stroke Johnson's are carburated. Ficht's are only Evinrude. In about 97 they started making the first fichts in the mid size motors (don't hold me to this being the exact year), in 99 they made the first 3.0L 90 degree V-6 fichts (200 and 225 hp). The early mid size fichts had serious problems, especially the V-4's. The 99 and 2000 200 and 225's had issues but they were mostly caused the ECU problems. There are a couple of companies that do major upgrades on those ECUs and they make great motors afterwards. In Dec 2000 or Jan 2001 BRP bougth the defunct OMC and revamped the whole ficht program which made the 2001 motors a better choice than the earlier motors. From 2002 on they are good motors. Then about 2006 they converted them to E-tecs, which is basically a ficht with many upgrades to for the ECU, fuel and oil delivery system and different pistons that run a lot hotter EGT's so they burn a whole lot cleaner

yep, my mistake. Thats a carbed 2 stroke johnson, a simple and reliable motor (i'm running one as well)

basically ... any ficht after 2001 or so is nothing to be afraid of ....
