How do you repair a transducer cable?

Featured Replies

I allowed the transducer cable on my Lowrance depth finder to get caught in the trolling motor bracket.  Dumb!  It cut through the outer cover and through most of the cable.

Is it difficult to repair.  If I am not mistaken, it is a small coaxial cable.  I know nothing at all about electronics and, before spending money for a new transducer or new depth finder, I would like to try to repair this one.

The wire consists of an insulated inner wire and an outer sheath/braided wire.  Cut the wire in half at the damaged area.  Strip back an inch or so of the outer cable. Pull the braided sheath wire back. strip the insulation off both ends of the inner wire.  Slide on a piece of heat shrink tubing before connecting the wire together.  Twist both ends of the inner wire together, solder, then slide the heat shrink tubing over your new connection and shrink the tubing down over it.

For the outer wire braid, you can either use a larger piece of heat shrink tubing or electrical tape.  Pull the braided outer wiring and twist both ends together.  Solder.  Then either slide you heat shrink tubing in place or wrap thoroughly with electrical tape.  You should be good to go.  I've had several cables cut in half the same way yours did, this method has never failed.  ;)

Same thing has happened to me.

Thanks for the knowledge Cart7! ;)

You can also use a connector kit for cable tv.
