Add a trolling motor to a Pontoon boat?

Featured Replies

Anyone ever done this and is it worth it?   ::)

I have a pontoon boat that we use on an inland lake mainly for swimming off and tooling around the lake. I also like to go out fishing on it but constantly starting and stopping the motor while fishing around the shoreline becomes a hassle.

I was wondering if anyone has ever added a trolling motor to their pontoon boat. The only problem I could see would be where to mount it. There's not enough room on the transom to mount it next to the outboard and if I mount it to the front, it would have to be easily removed so that it wouldn't interfere with the swim ladder or foot traffic walking around the front of the boat.

Any suggestions?

I'm looking to getting one for my pontoon boat.  You don't need to have the heavy battery & trolling motor on your pontoon, it is separate from it.  You can then keep your gear & keep your pontoon lighter in weight.

It does help, but you will not be able to control it as good as you do a bass boat.

We put one on my dad's 28 footer and it works OK.  what we did was there is a small rail that runs in the front of the deck, abut 4 inches high. we built a plate out of plywood. maybe 12 inches long and 4 inches high.  drilled through the rail and Bolted it to the rail and used  L brackes to bolt it to the deck. and mounted a transom mout TM( Minnkota 50# 12 volt)  we just turned the head around. we then ran power lines under the deck from the batteries and put a plug under the fron seat. This way when he doesn't need the TM it can come off and sit under one of the bech seats.

Another guy by our camp, uses a bow mount foot controled MG. he bought a quick release mount. that looks like two small discs. when the motor is off you can walk on the mount and not know its there.

Knowing how the front deck is built would be a huge help to those wishing to offer a solution. Like HPBB I've installed trolling motors on Pontoons & like with any boat you'll want as many pounds of thrust as you can afford.
