Electric Outboards on Pre-built boats

Featured Replies

Ray's are the only company that I know about and they seem amazing from the ones I've used and seen but they are heavy and require 10 batteries for the 60 volt, which are the only ones worth buying according to my local Ray dealer, plus the 3 others for accessories and trolling motors.

Are there any other companies that make electric outboards for a reservoir rig that are good?  And if I was going for speed which would be the best?  The Ray's I have been on moved but they require atleast a 16 foot boat to handle all the batteries and 16 foot was the biggest I was looking for with 14 being ideal.

I was also told that a Ray can't push a 16' fiberglass nitro but could it push one of the pre-made Bass Tracker Aluminum boats with pre built decks?  Bass Tracker makes a pre-made 16 foot with decking and storage that is perfect if it had an electric that could push it.

I would prefer to convert a jon boat but I'm not sure if I have the time.  So I'm looking for an option of just buying a Bass Tracker or G3 that are already with decks and storage so I can just add an electric motor and go.  I'm just not sure what I should be looking for.

Currently I am fishing on a buddies 18" alumacraft with a prebuilt deck.  It's great but I don't own it and it's very difficult to get in and out alone.  I would prefer a 16' with a little less weight and little more umph for speed.  I'd love the storage and lay out of the pre-made trackers and others and it seems that I can purchase them without the gas outboard but could I just replace the gas with electric?

Sorry for so many questions but I've got the "bass" bug and have nothing else to do with my money so why not.

14 or 16 foot with speed and the ability to go all day without rowing back to dock....that's the dream...but can it be reality?

Side note.....AMAZING web site!

I'm not familiar with electric outboards at all.  I know that Cabela's has quite a few offerings from Minn Kota on high powered electrics providing massive thrust. More than enough to push a 16 foot aluminum bassboat along at a good clip.

As for the boat, I don't know if you can buy a standalone Tracker without a motor, you'd have to check with a dealer.  Most of the others like G3, Lowes, Landau, etc. will be easier to deal with on something like that since they're not primarily package boat dealers.

Let us know what you figure out.

Anyone have any experience with the Briggs and Stratton remote style?  Seems like 4 batteries would be better then the 10 Rays require.  But I would imagine I would be better of with 8 and a way to switch from one group to another if they run low.  Is that even possible?

24 volt 6 hp !!  but that price.

But on that 60volt system  no way

To me it seam like the extra weight of the batteries 10 batteries 600 pounds, 8 batteries 480 pounds. All to get 6 hp out of a electric motor. Man that little 6 horse has to push 480 to 600 pounds and that not even including the BOAT, YOUR GEAR, AND OF COURSE THE FISHERMAN ;D And the cost alone is just way to far out their for 6 little horses. But to each his or her own. If you got a boat that can handle 600 pounds of batteries and what ever the motor weighs and still be a good fishing platform go for it!

The boat I fish on now (a Family Members) is actually 60V Ray with ten batteries for the motor and 3 for TM and accessories (Hair Blow dryers, lighted mackup mirrors, etc.).  It's an 18 foot alumicraft with factory built decking and it moves pretty well.  We run it at 60% most of the time and reach about 6 MPH according to the Lowrance.  The total rig including motor is reaching $18K but it's the *** of the reservoirs we hit with pretty much every head turning as we go.

We have a 21 foot Ranger for anything allowing gas but the reservoirs in this area won't let you touch them with a gas prop so electric is the only way and for something that big and heavy we would need several high thrust Minn Kotas and wouldn't reach the far points of the lake for hours.  With the Ray we can get from one side to the other in 40 mins tops and the gates to the reservoir open at 5 so we can easily get where we need to be before the sun comes up.

I'm not sure of the other options but Ray's a great motors....they just cost over $7k...YIPE!
