U40 Cork Sealer Users - Do You Ever Reapply?

Featured Replies

I have been using U40 of all my rods for both open water and icefishing for the last few years. Love the stuff. I'm a big fan of the feel of new cork, and U40 keeps it feeling than way for years.

I'm curious if anyone ever cleans their cork and reapplies another coat of the U40 after a few years?

The only time I reapply is if I have some filler falling out after a lot of use. I'll lightly sand the handle, patch the filler spots, lightly sand it again, then clean and seal. When I say lightly sand, I literally mean two or three passes with 220 grit. Just enough to remove the sealer. I've only had to do that a couple times.

I only apply it once a year after I clean it. No need to apply it more than once a year.

Been using U-40 for a couple of decades now. When cork is brand new, I "season" it with this material, using a very liberal soaking. Let the stuff soak in. Lightly wipe off excess and let it set overnight. Next season I may lightly "wet" a rag with U-40 and lightly wipe it over pre-seasoned cork - once the cork has been cleaned (I use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser), which is paramount to any treatment.

Have rods that are over 20 years old and they look almost brand new.
