Winterizing

Featured Replies

A quick question on what you all do when winterizing your boats. I have read that the fuel tank should either be completly full or completly drained. Which is better and why not have a half tank of fuel with the appropriate amount of fuel stabelizer?

Thanks

I've heard both stories, I keep it about 1/2 full and stableizer to it and have never had a problem the next year. You also want to get the fuel and water out of any lines you might have. The idea is to keep it full to help prevent condensation build up. I always fogg mine around Jan-feb. depending on how the weather looks for a couple of months. NC has year round fishing most of the time. Key word winterizing on this site for more tips.

Condensation occurs because of a temp difference between the outside air and the air in the fuel tank. A full tank has less air which equals less condensation or less water. If you have portable tanks and keep them in a protected area you can store them empty with the lids off and not have a problem because this allows the air temp to equalize. If you keep your boat inside or live in a mild climate you may not have a problem but why take a chance.

I live in Tennessee and I keep my tank full during the winter months and always use Sta-bil even though I normally use the boat year round. Cheap insurance IMHO........Al

kb here    the mech   told me you can run it dry of gas if its a carb engine or stabolizer it .  but DO NOT run a motor or tank with injectors dry  seafoam or stabolizer  kb

I had that same question for my boat dealer.  He said that condensation inside the tank should not be a problem with the poly tanks fitted on most boats now days.  It is only an issue with the older metal tanks.  So the dealer just adds fuel stabalizer to whatever amount of fuel is in the tank.

I had a quarter of tank when I put it away last fall after the dealer winterized it.  Filled it up with fresh fuel in the spring and it never missed a beat after several months storage in an unheated garage. :(
