Jon Boat Modding - Adding a sheet metal floor???

Featured Replies

I know some of you members are into modding/building boats.  I built a plywood/carpet floor in my 16' tracker jon.....but I am thinking of re-doing it this winter.  Where do you get the sheet metal/aluminum for the floor?  Some type of specialty shop I would imagine.  Also, do you just pre-drill and screw small screws into the floor ribs?  I don't know how to weld, so thats probably what I would do.  Any tips on how to get this started would be great.

Ahh! Boat Project ;D

Get your metal from a local metal supply shop(start there)

Alluminum is best period for the boat but, not for the pocket book :(

Some do wood sealed with water stain(Thompson maybe)

You'll have to decide what you want on that. Check this out http://userpages.sofnet.com/robertg/boat.htm it helped me with some ideas. He has a page also that shows how he built the floor.

LBH(Russ) has a boat Project thats cool too, very useful :(

Good luck ;)

Lighter weight & lasts forever  :(

I think hot, slippery and loud scare me a lot more.

I mean, Do you need a floor to last 500 yrs, 30 isn't enough??

Weight-  OK, I agree, it's lighter.

The ends don't justify the means on this one for me.

One guy I know used this stuff called honeycomb-aluminum, super super light, and just like wood. You should look into it, but I'm sure its expensive.

They make certain aircraft parts out of that.  Often, the stuff has the thickness of 3/4 inch ply, the weight of sheet metal, and the strength of - well I don't know that much, but it is WELL beyond the strength of the sheet metal, and more than likely the ply.  Plus, the pieces I got to play with seemed to have some sound absorption, due to the hollow design.  We have been hoping for years to find a load of that stuff, that is cheap enough, that we can afford it.

Your best bet for finding that stuff is aircraft boneyards, and some army/airforce surplus stores (seen quite a few smaller pieces at those)

But, it will come at a high price.

Hot: carpet stops that problem

Slippery: carpet stops that problem

Loud: carpet stops that problem

I have a carpeted floor made of wood now....thinking of re-doing it to metal...but if its not going to be much different, and alot of $$$, then no need. Here is what I have now...I also made the little storage box.

Looks great :(

my 1436 jon I priced alum for flooring, lets see a 1inch L-angle at 25ft was 23.74 a piece. 1 1/2 square tubing was 37.95 at 12ft a piece. it was cheaper if you got the stock at full length, but 25 foot aluminum bars hanging on my little ford ranger wasn't practicle.

After seeing what you already got I would keep it.

Looks good man, what else ya got on it :-?

Not too much....it is for the electric only reservoirs in my area.  So there's a front and back trolling motor, some storage, and thats about it.

Cool 8-)

So, what pound motor and kind do ya got?

I wanna get totally new ones and If money was good I'd like the three motor idea. Just the spoil me sendrome ;D

I'd set two 40# or 55# on the back, set the throttles open-hook to a hot toggle switch, put a #40 or 55#(with optional key remote) up front. use the front while fishing and steering the jon, when I'm ready to move it on down I'd hit my toggle switch and off I'd go ;)

Be a conversation peice too :(

But, money doens't grow on my tree ;)

Jon boat with a NOS switch,lol....we got a super tuner in the group  :(
