Fenwick Aetos Casting Rod

Featured Replies

Looking at the Fenwick Aetos 7' medium fast casting rod to add to my arsenal.  Most of my rods are MH so I think this would be good for a crankbait rod?  Anyone have much experience with this rod?  Any comparison to the Dobyns Fury line?  Probably pair it with my Tatula CT.

I just picked up my first dedicated crankbait rod and while shopping for weeks the general consensus was a medium or medium heavy moderate or moderate fast rod unless you doing real deep diving crankbaits. I use to use a 7’ medium fast spinning rod for most of my fishing including cranks and now that I’ve fished the moderate fast I don’t think I’d ever go back. My hook up ratio has increased significantly!! I also went with a medium heavy for the little extra back bone for when I hook up with a big boy close to weeds.

I have the previous generation 7' MH MF and use it as a spinnerbait stick primarily, but it's pretty versatile.  I can't speak on the med, but the MH fishes heavier power and faster action than most.  I love the rod, but would not purchase an Aetos MF action rod as a crank bait rod unless, I were planning on fishing some very stretchy line.  This isn't by any means a negative review of the rod (I love mine), but I wouldn't use it for that purpose.  Instead, most of my crank bait fishing is done on less expensive Abu Veritas Winch rods.

I agree with @Turkey sandwich.  I have three Aetos rods (3MH and one M) and they are all quite fast.  On the other hand, I have a St. Croix Rage MF with specs similar to the Aetos, but they are so different; the St Croix is a wonderful cranking rod, the Aetos, not so much.  You almost have to get your hands on one and feel for yourself.

I bought a different Fenwick the same time I got the St. Croix - both 7 or 7'1", both MF, both rated to 5/8 oz; but the rods are night and day the way they fish.

Never held a Fury, so I can't help you there.
