Need suggestion on used Minn Kota motor

Featured Replies

Just picked up a little Sea Eagle inflataable 6.  Perfect for one or two people.

I would like to get a small used minn kota moter for it.  Need some suggestions on a simple short shaft small motor that might not be in vogue these days for bigger boats but would be just fine for an inflatable.   thanks

Any small 12V trolling motor will be fine as long as it still works.  We have been using 36# thrusts on our jon boats and were not sttign any speed records but were are covering more ground... er.. water than can be fished in a day.

Don't forget your battery needs to be deep cycle and your charger needs to be an automatic shut of and trickle charge.  Charge immediately after each use.

Are you saying I can't use my Sears battery charger that I have used on my car batteries???

Does the sea Eagle have hard floors?  Batteries are very heavy and could pose an issue in a small inflatable boat.  Any of the minn kota series that still work should be good for your use.  And yes you can use the Sears charger it just may not be the best option.  I use a charger that is older then I am to charge my batteries.  It is fully manual but with some practice does the job well.

Good Luck,

Tom D.

Yes you can use the sears charger.  I wasn't considering that you already had one.  To protect the battery and prolong its life the fully auto chargers are much easier.  With a manual charger you should follow certain guidelines while charging that require checking on the battery a few times during each time you charge it.  Mostly be sure not to over chare it to the point the acid is evaporating off of the lead.

Google "deep cycle battery maintenance" if you want to know more.

Yes the sea eagle has wooden floors that you install and then continue inflating the boat to hold them in place. You can easily stand up in the boat with absolutely no problem. It is a great boat and can get you in places that a reg boat could never go.

thanks

Sounds like you got youself a pretty good boat there then.  I don't see why a Minn Kota motor would not work for you.

i bought an inflatable on dicks and i can not use a trolling motor with it although it does have a mount for it..the motor just weighed the boat down too much ;)

As a result of  seeing LongMikes' Sea Eagle boat here on the forum I bought some of these used. They are incredible. You can put a small gas motor on them or a trolling motor with no problem .  These inflatable boats are the best thing I have bought in a long time. You can keep them in your trunk and inflate them at the water, or inflate them and put them on the top of the car or as I do with my SE6 I just inflate it and put it in the back of my van and pull down to the water and lift it out myself and throw it in!!  You can easily stand up in these.  Much tougher skin on these that on the Sevylor or other inflateables.  Plenty of these used on the net also.
