Building Boat Need Help

Featured Replies

Ok so me and some friends have found something to do until we can get on the water again..... build a boat. We are thinking of getting some 55 gallon drums and using those for the bottom then building supports on the drums, then building up from there. Someone from my school has actually done this before so I will be talking to him soon about it, but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas for this. Its going to be roomy enough to walk around on and will be quite the upgrade from the inflatable we have been fishing from if this works  ;D. I will be posting pics once we get moving with this and will be sure to send some reports when its finished. Its gonna cost some money but it will be worth it. So if anyone has any ideas for us they would be appreciated, also if anyone has any 55 gal drums we'd be willing to purchase them from you.

I though the bubble wrap stretched around a frame idea was pretty good.

Whatever you decide on, make sure and video the maiden voyage.   ;)

haha nice little rig

wow! is all i can say to that, what an awesome set up lmao

Regular drums are gonna rust on ya. Beer kegs or plastic is the only proper way to build a yacht!!!!!! ;D

i heard pvc pipe with capped ends work well for this

hmmm... thats another idea but i don't know how much weight they'd be able to hold, but it is a possibility.

im sure they can hold quite a bit, take 10-10 foot pipes and build with that

The weight to capacity rating on PVC is unfavorable.  In essence, it sounds like you are going to be building a moving dock.  Foam is often used to hold docks up.  Most places that sell trailers will give you foam blocks for free.  Often, they measure about 15 inches, by 15 inches, by about 2 feet.  We use them for putting boats on, when working on trailers, or as shop work seats.  (very light, and easy to kick around, but not hard on my bony butt)  Northern tool, and tractor supply company are where we get ours.

If you built it well enough, you could put a small outboard on it, but be sure to test it, before putting the outboard on it, as submersing the head of an outboard is NOT good for it.  In fact, it is downright bad for it.
