Registration Req'd?

Featured Replies

If all goes well, tomorrow I will buy my first boat.  A 12' jon boat with a trolling motor.  I wasn't sure if I needed to register the boat since it was just powered by a trolling motor.  The Texas parks and wildlife says any motorized boat needs to be registered.  Does this apply for electric motors too?

ANY motorized boat on state waters needs to be registered, regardless gas or electric

Yes, it applies to any form of power.

Ok..thanks guys...just wasn't sure because i've seen photos of jon boats on this site without reg. numbers on the side.  I'll register it.

Same in Florida.  But we have so many lakes that aren't patrolled that many people don't register if they only use on smaller unpatrolled lakes.

In Texas you will need to get the paperwork completed, pay the sales tax, and registrar the trailer also if it is on one. It will need a set of TX numbers also.

kinda, along the same lines as the registration, do you have to pay personal property tax on a john boat/trailer?

I am trying to get one this spring, and trying to get all my initial expenses in line.

BTW, i didn't mean to hijack the thread, sorry

It varies from state to state. In Texas, that Jon Boat has to be titled and registered. The trolling motor doesn't.

Here in ohio you only have to register a boat if it is over 10 hp ;D ;D regardless of gas or electric.
