Need new boat cover

Featured Replies

My cover is starting to rip apart through dry rot I think.  It wasn't used for quite some time but it just sat in a garage for about 9 years.  I have used it as a storage cover but it is starting to rip.  I have thought and may try to stitch it up but I really need it for trailering the rig.

I have seen the 'fit all' models that the big box stores sell, has anyone tried them.  I have an '89 Champion with the older style windshields i.e. the straight up type.

I am thinking a good custom cover may be the best ticket though?  The current cover fits pretty well, I was thinking somebody may be able to use it as a template for a new one.

Do you guys no where to turn for this?  I don't want to drop a ton of money.  I hoping to stay around $200.00 to $300.00.

any ideas, advice or help would be much appreciated.

Bass Pro has a trailerable cover ( Bass Pro Shops® Weathersafe Trailer Tite Standard-Duty Trailerable Boat Covers) for $85-$125 (depends on the size you need). I have it and it has 1 strap in front, 3 that go around the boat, and 2 at the back.  I haven't pulled the boat anywhere yet, so I'll have to let you know later when I tow it on how it does being towed.

1st If your current cover is an acryic blend it shold not be rotted. To test take some materials and pinch it then try to tear it. IF it tears easly then yes its rotted. IF its just the stiching coming apart more than likely they used a cotton thread and yes it no good and can be restiched.

2nd if it no good an you need a new cover someone can use it as a pattern but I personally never liked to do that because it never fits correctly due to shrinking and streching in areas. As far as getting one make for 2-300 is cheap if your looking for a good material. If you know someone who mkes them then they might be able to make one at cost for you which is about 3-400 pending on material.

I used to do upholstery and boat cover s for 8 years but luckly I kept in touch with my old boss and I can get my materials at cost and I love to sew and make my covers.

Good luck.

Call and speak to a rep at Bass Pro Shop.

They know boat covers and will be very helpful.

As for the cost?  It depends on the type of cover and the material makeup.

Give BPS a call, as previously suggested, and listen to their advice and quote.

Deans has been making covers for Champions for years.  As far as I know, they still have the templates to make a custom cover for your 184.

My local upholsterer made mine out of extra material that he had ordered for another customer.  It set me back $200.00  Lucky for me, I'm a screenprinter, and he's a customer so it only set me back $200.00 worth of Tee Shirts.

First:  Thanks guys for all the ideas and recommendations.  I just got off the phone with Dean's.  Great people and all I had to do was give my serial # and they looked me up!  Little more $ than I wanted to spend but - it's going to be just like the old one (minus the stripe down the middle).  I am excited!
