Need a single rod type recommendation for 3 different presentations

Featured Replies

I need a little help as to what kind of rod/reel I should go with. Pretty much fish for LMB exclusively. I've got a new 7' Lew's Mach 2 combo that I use kind of as a universal rod for a lot of lures/techniques. I also have a 6'9" spinning set up for more finesse stuff. I'm looking for a rod/reel setup that I can use with a frog, pitch a jog/soft plastic and even use with a crank bait from time to time. I certainly understand ideally to have a specific rod for each of those techniques but the budget currently does not allow that. For a single rod that can handle those 3 techniques I was thinking about something 7'2" to 7'6" heavy rod, not sure if I want it to have a fast or slower action, not sure if I want a graphite or composite rod or what. Braid or fluoro for this job?

Cranks, Frogs and pitching? For crankbaits most people use a Medium Moderate Action rod, graphite or composite being a preference. Frogs need a heavier/faster rod to get a good hookset and to horse the fish and weeds in. I’m afraid you’ll be reeling in what’s left of the bass if you use a crankbait on a pitching/frog rod.

What's yer budget?  There are plenty of rods that can do all that

7' medium fast

You can use a medium heavy for frogs as long as you’re not fishing thick matted vegetation I’ve done it before but i don’t think you can find a mh rod that you can fish frogs and crankbaits you can probably find a good mhf rod for jigs worms and frogs but probably not for cranking.
