New Optimax

Featured Replies

I just put a brand new Optimax 115 on my bass cat. We are still in the break in period and were told not to go over 5500 rmps. I am just wondering what the highest rpm's you can safely run after the break in period on the optimax? At 5500 rpm's i still have a lot of throttle left.

Check your manual.  I have a 225 opti and it says 5600 in my manual.

Your maximum RPMs is dictated by 3 things:

1 Prop - Depending on the propellor it will limit your maximum RPMs or allow you to exceed your motor's recommended maximum depending on the pitch.

2 Engine Electronics many now have rev limiters to ensure that you do not exceed the maximum RPM.

3 Engine blows up because you exceeded the recommended maximum RPMs. Shouldn't happen on newer motors but could happen on older engines. This definitely limits your future RPMs! ;D

Somewhere on your engine there is probably a little plate/tag that has the make, model, year, and max rpm's on it.

It should also set off an alarm at to high rpms. At least mine does a buzzer if I remember correctly

Thanks for all the info. I think it may be a prop thing. i fished all weekend and experimented with the motor. I am hitting 5700 rpms before i even get close to putting the throttle all the way down. It gets up out of the hole very quick but has no top end speed. Time to trade props.

If your prop is ok check the hub.  You may have spun a hub, which will increase your rpms without gaining much speed..........Al

I bet you there is a tattle/tale built in the circuit that will tell the dealer everything they need to know about how you have run that motor from day one. Check your manuel or call your dealer to get the correct procedure...
