What size lake fork frog hook

Featured Replies

I ordered both the 2/0 and the 4/0 lake fork frog hook but I honestly don't know what size would be better.  I'll probably try both at some point but what size do you guys prefer?

You're talking about the frog trailer hook, right? If so, the 2/0 works well with a smaller frog; I use it with a Booyah Jr. Pad crasher.  I have the 4/0 size, however, haven't used these yet.  The 4/0 looks as if it would be better with a larger size frog, although the 2/0 will still work well if you can slip the ring on each side of the trailer hook harness over the hook on each side of your frog.

I think you will really like these trailer hooks; they will definitely help you hook more fish.  Good luck

I am using the pad crasher regular size and have had great luck getting blowups but I have only managed to get a few into my kayak.  I tried bending the hooks and it hasn't made it effective enough for me to want to frog fish.  I absolutely hate missing fish because I have to work for it where I fish.  I am hoping these hooks make me confident enough to continue to frog fish because I do get a good amount of bites with them.

Eric - I frog fish exclusively from a kayak - these hooks will increase your hook up ratio tremendously.  I use a 6'9" medium first generation Veritas spinning rod and a Mitchell 300 Pro reel with 30# test braid; so not a super heavy rig and I have great success frog fishing when the fish are hitting frogs.  Attached is a picture of one of many fish that I landed using the trailer hook.

Note that I have no affiliation with this company or any other company, I just use the product and it works well.  Matter of fact; when I ordered these hooks a few years ago, I had to wait 6 weeks to get them from Cabelas, since they were out of stock.

I think these hooks will up your confidence level and hook ups.  Best wishes.

Thanks for the input, I'll put the 4/0 on and probably go out Monday to test them out if it doesn't rain too bad.  I hope to have a couple pics if the fish are willing.  Also we are getting hit with 4 days of rain from the tropical storm, anyone have a clue what that will do to the fishing?  I'm going to be fishing a 20 acre pit with an average depth of 10 ft.

I ended up catching 2 on the frog and losing 2 nice ones today.  It sucks that one of them was for sure a PB.  I set it hard and felt like a stump.  Pulled me and my kayak for several feet and then decided to go airborne.  It was at least 3 feet in the air and threw my frog.  Couldn't say how big it was but I heard Jaws music.

Here was the biggest one I caught today...  took me a min to figure out how to post the photo.

I just ordered a couple of these in 2/0, for a test this summer. Over the last couple years I’ve worked on my frog fishing quite a bit and managed to vastly improve my hit to catch ratio probably close to 80-90%, but I’d like to see if maybe this’ll up it a few more points. Most of the water I fish isn’t really super thick slop so I doubt the extra hook will be much of an issue in snagging weeds,  if I guess we’ll see ( in about 6 months).

I used them last time I was out and i found them to still be very weedless.  I was able to retrieve over some very thick grass without any problems.  Not sure how it will go through pads and it may not come off of the bank as well for people that like to hop them off the ground into the water.
