3.8” Bass Pro Speed Shad Best Weighted Hook size?

Featured Replies

Sorry if my questions are pretty basic guys. I’m just starting up bass fishing again.

I just bought the 3.8” Speed Shad from Bass Pro. What would be be the best size and/or brand weighted swimbait hooks for this size bait?

Ill be fishing a stream for smallmouth Bass. The stream averages about 1’-2’ deep. With deeper spots scattered.

Thanks Greatly!

I like Berkley fusion19 or Vmc hooks. The Berkley's happen to be on sale at BPS right now. I'm not expert on hook sizes but I have some 3.8 Keitechs and I think they are on 3/0 swimbait hooks.

Thanks man! I’ll check them out. ?

Since you're fishing so shallow you don't need much weight. Also, WHERE the weight is on the hook really affects the action. I really like the VMC Drop Dead Weighted Hooks when fishing shallow water. You can go as light as 1/16 ounce. I prefer an Owner CPS screw lock in them, though. These hooks will allow your swim bait to drop in the horizontal position instead of nosing down. Looks very natural.

The only thing to consider on these hooks is they run a tad long. So, downsize one size compared to other hooks and you'll be fine.

Love the Speed Shad, too. It's a great bait that don't break the bank. I've used all sizes and they all work well.

Thanks for the VMC suggestion Big Rock! Im checking those out now. I also like that the lead is painted black rather than the normal lead.

I like these guys for 3-4" paddle tails;

The 1/16oz ones should be good for shallow.  I use the 1/8oz ones as that was the lightest they offered when I last stocked up.  They do a flat $4 shipping fee, wich isn't too bad.
