thrust vs hp

Featured Replies

anyone know how to compare hp and thrust? like 55lbs thrust will push a boat equal to a 2 hp outboard or whatever? thanks

thanks team_dougherty. so how bout comparing performance? how fast do these jons run that are using multiple tm on back? thanks again

Search the forum. There are many posts about the subject of multiple trolling motors on boats.

Funny, I have a old 46 pound thrust Minn Kota on it and it says 2.8 horsepower. So how does that work if there is no direct correlation?

its strange. if im not mistaking, a jet engine produces thrust but is measured in hp.

I'm looking at another site and I guess there is a formula to find the horse power of an electric motor. This is not my work but it makes some sense. I don't think the formula is right though if this motor is a 46 and says 2.8 hp.

Volts times Amps equals Watts Divide by 746 equals Horsepower

But another site says it is not possible because one is measured in a Watt, the other is measured in Newtons.

:-? :-? :-?

who knows. i was mainly just curious if a boat will run 10 mph with a 5 hp motor, then how big and how many trolling motors would it take to accomplish the same speed, if it can even be done.

I could be way off on this but I think a watt is a newton per second.

you more than likely will need one of these. Plus a few batteries.

so how would this compare to using say, 2 80 lb tm as far as performance and time it takes to run down batteries?  thanks for all the replies and help.

Got me. The web site says it has 75 LBS of thrust at cruise and 150 at full speed. It also claims two hour run time at cruise. It uses 4 batteries. Thats a lot of weight. The prop on the B&S is more like a regular outboard. Here is a quick video.

I would suggest just getting the biggest minn-kota you can afford and put a kipawa prop on it.
